If you’ve ever visited Florida during the summer, you know the heat is no joke. Between the blazing sun, the humidity, and the miles of walking, staying cool can honestly make or break your vacation. After several trips to both Disney and Universal, we’ve picked up a few tricks that have helped us survive those hot park days and still have fun.
One of the biggest game changers for us was finally trying Universal’s Coca-Cola Freestyle cups. When we visited Universal Resort in Orlando for the first time in January 2024, we skipped them because the weather was cooler and we didn’t think we’d need them. Fast forward to our May 2026 trip, and those cups quickly became one of the best purchases we made.

Not only did they help us stay hydrated throughout the day, but they also gave us access to Freestyle machines all over the parks. One of the coolest parts was finding the exclusive drink flavors available in different areas. It almost turned into a little scavenger hunt for us. Every time we stopped for a refill, it gave us a chance to cool off for a few minutes before heading to the next attraction.
What we didn’t realize before buying them is that they’re useful long after your first trip. Once you purchase the cup, you can bring it back on future vacations and simply pay the activation fee for the day instead of buying a brand-new cup. After it’s activated, you can refill your cup about every 10 minutes all day long. If you visit Universal regularly, the savings can definitely add up. More importantly, having access to ice-cold drinks throughout the day when it’s 95 degrees outside is absolutely worth it.
If you’re spending time at the Walt Disney World Resort, one of our favorite money-saving and cooling tricks is taking advantage of the free ice water available at any quick-service restaurant. In additions to free ice water, you can also find water fountain and water bottle refills stations around the parks. We always bring reusable water bottles and refill them throughout the day. It’s an easy way to stay hydrated without constantly spending money on bottled water.
Now let’s talk about Florida water for a second. If you’ve been there, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not everyone’s favorite taste. We always throw a few flavor packets into our park bag, and they make a huge difference. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and can help encourage everyone to drink more water throughout the day. Some of our favorites include LMNT Zero Sugar Electrolytes and Liquid I.V.® Hydration Multiplier. This is especially helpful if you’re traveling with kids who suddenly decide they don’t like water when they’re standing in the middle of a hot theme park.
Another item that has earned a permanent spot in our park bag is a cooling towel. I honestly didn’t think they would make much of a difference until we tried one. Wet it, wring it out, and place it around your neck. It feels amazing when you’re walking through the parks during the hottest part of the day and can help cool you down faster than you might expect.
One tip that most people don’t think about is using indoor gift shops as cooling stations. Everyone heads for rides when they need air conditioning, but the shops are often just as cool and much less crowded. If you’re starting to feel overheated, take five minutes to browse a store and cool down before heading back outside. Sometimes that’s all you need to recharge.

We also never go to the parks in the summer without a portable fan. Whether it’s a handheld fan or one that hangs around your neck, having your own airflow while standing in outdoor queues can make a huge difference. Florida’s humidity can make the heat feel even worse, and that little bit of air can be surprisingly refreshing.
Another thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is what you’re wearing. Lightweight, breathable clothing can help, but don’t overlook your socks and shoes. When your feet get hot and uncomfortable, the rest of your body tends to follow. Moisture-wicking socks and comfortable shoes can make those long park days much more enjoyable.
The biggest thing we’ve learned over the years is to drink water before you feel thirsty. Once you’re thirsty, you’re already starting to get dehydrated. We try to take a few sips whenever we stop for a ride, a snack, or a show. Those little habits make a huge difference by the end of the day.

At the end of the day, surviving a Florida summer park day is all about being prepared. Whether it’s Universal’s Freestyle cups, Disney’s free ice water, flavor packets, cooling towels, portable fans, or simply knowing when to step inside and cool off, a little planning can go a long way. The more comfortable you are, the more energy you’ll have to enjoy the magic, make memories, and focus on what you came for in the first place.
